Perinatal mental health refers to a woman's mental health during pregnancy, while postpartum mental health refers to the mental health of a woman after giving birth. These terms encompass a range of emotional and mental health issues that can arise during the perinatal and postpartum periods.
Perinatal and postpartum mental health can include conditions such as anxiety, depression, postpartum psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These conditions can manifest in various ways, such as feelings of sadness or hopelessness, difficulty sleeping or eating, changes in mood or energy levels, and intrusive thoughts or compulsive behaviors.
It is important to note that perinatal and postpartum mental health can affect not only the woman giving birth but also her partner and family. Therefore, it is essential to provide appropriate support and resources to help women and their families cope with these issues.
All parties involved should seek support. During family planning all kinds of items come into the equation. Pregnancy, fertility, moods, adjustments, supports and more impact outcomes and results. In supporting individuals with maternity issues we also promote and provide supports to partners, care providers, and others so that we can utilize all resources to potentially make the transition result in the best possible outcome.
Sessions can begin as early as planning the pregnancy. Sessions also begin when you have thoughts about making a decision on becoming a parent. Sessions can also begin with a loss planned or unplanned.
Telehealth/Online/Virtual Therapy is a great way of accessing therapy support. Research has shown that it could be as effective as conventional, in-person, therapy.
Here are a few other benefits to consider…
No Commute – You will spend zero time solidifying transportation. This means no gas, no bus, no Uber ride needed. Mid day and Weekend - Lunch breaks and weekend free time could be utilized for a session.
After Hours Availability – With Online sessions, there is more flexibility for earlier or later session times.
Your Privacy – For those of you who are apprehensive or uncomfortable with the idea of receiving therapy, online therapy is an opportunity to explore this means of support in absolute privacy, without having to actually visit the office. My hope is that this added level of anonymity can work to reduce social stigma and provide a new way of support to someone who may not have even considered therapy.
Some additional factors to consider…
• It is important for you to have a quiet place with minimal distractions during online sessions. I will be sure to ‘meet’ with you in a space that ensures your confidentiality but you should also consider your own privacy when choosing a space for online sessions.
• YSS utilizes a HIPAA compliant video conferencing software for Online Therapy sessions. You will be able to join your session from a mobile phone, tablet, or computer by way of the unique link that will provide to you . There are no apps to download.
• Each state has its own guidelines related to distance health and online therapy. I am currently licensed in the state of Maryland, under the rules of the Maryland Board, I can provide online therapy services to anyone within the state of Maryland.
